Balanced crystalloids may be preferred to I.V. saline

KEY POINT

Two large, single-center trials published in theNew England Journal of Medicine comparing balanced crystalloid solutions with saline in both noncritically ill and critically ill adults found that use of balanced crystalloid solutions resulted in significant reductions in the risk of major adverse kidney events within 30 days (defined as a composite of death from any cause, use of new renal-replacement therapy, or persistent renal dysfunction).
